Auction ends 11-8-2019

Each year, famous artists are inundated with requests to donate their work from a multitude of charities' benefit auctions taking place round the clock at galas and online. As a whole, artists step-up time and time again to help a range of great causes. Yet, for many non-profits, asking for donated work can often feel like they are asking an artist for the shirt of their back.

Well, that is what Maurizio Cattelan did, literally, for the Mister ArtSee benefit auction on paddle8.com

Maurizio donated a one-of kind hand made shirt he created for the opening of his recent Yuz Museum exhibit titled The Artist Is Present. The shirt, a satirical logo of the exhibition's sponsor Gucci, was meant to be produced in a limited edition. However, the plan was never initiated, leaving the donated shirt as a one of a kind performance piece and work by the world renowned artist.

" I see Maurizio's act of choosing what to donate as meaningful as what he donated" says Mister ArtSee's Executive Director, artist Elliott Arkin. "He's made the whole auction a performative statement and experience. A brilliant conceptual act that gives the donation that much more meaning and value." .

The work is estimated at $40,000 and includes several other objects from the Yuz Museum exhibition and elsewhere. Bidding starts at $10,000 but, the organization is hoping a unique work by Cattelan is suitable for museums and will result in much interest.

Arkin concludes "I'd like to think of Maurizio's donation as a positive act - a call to action for everyone - that maybe what feels like donating the shirt of your back, isn't so difficult after all!"
